In Swan Quarter in Hyde County, they call the new school campus under construction with the help of $36 million in lottery funds “Mattamuskeet Rising.”
School buildings on the campus have been weakened by age and the blows they’ve taken from hurricanes and northeasters that sweep into the county as it juts out into the Pamlico Sound.
But that is about to change. As a new building goes up, down will come some that are 60 years old or older. “Coming Soon – 2027,” says a sign at the site where teachers, principals, students, and their parents turned out for a groundbreaking ceremony recently. The community, the county, Hyde County Schools − with help from the state − came together to bring about that change.
“Thus was born Mattamuskeet Rising, a $36 million endeavor fueled by the North Carolina Education Lottery and the unwavering partnership between Hyde County Schools and the board of commissioners,” said Dr. Melanie Shaver, the Hyde County school superintendent, at the groundbreaking ceremony. “This project not only consolidates outdated buildings into a safe and modern and ADA compliant facility, but is also renewing our athletics and community spaces, spaces that have long served as the heartbeat of our local life.”
Half the money, $18 million, will fund a new school building that will provide a new gym, new school offices, and new classrooms for high school students. The other $18 million will provide classroom renovations, new athletic spaces, and site improvements to the campus. The funds come on top of a $6.4 million grant from lottery funds used to build a new Career and Technical Education building on the campus.
More than half of the money raised by your lottery each year now goes to our 100 counties to help build new schools and repair older ones. So far, 57 other counties have received special grants like Hyde County to build new schools. So when you play, we hope you have fun, have some good luck and that you know the money raised by the lottery is making a difference all across our state.
