William Somerville of Halifax took a chance on a $1 Cash 5 ticket and won a $179,387 jackpot.
Somerville bought his lucky ticket in the May 14 drawing from EP Mart on N.C. 48 in Battleboro. His ticket matched all five numbers in the drawing to win the jackpot. The odds of matching all five balls are 1 in 962,598.
He claimed his prize at lottery headquarters Friday and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $128,710.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Monday’s jackpot is $130,000.
The state provided $87.1 million in grants, using money raised by the lottery, to help build new schools in both the Halifax County Schools and Weldon City Schools districts.
