Paul Bierwirth of Greenville has played the same numbers on Cash 5 for 16 years, a tradition that paid off Monday with the winning of a $439,226 jackpot.
He bought his ticket from the Speedway on Dickinson Avenue in Greenville. The next morning, he checked the drawing online while drinking a cup of coffee.
His lucky set of numbers matched the winning numbers to win the jackpot. The odds of matching numbers on all five balls are 1 in 962,598.
Bierwirth claimed his prize at lottery headquarters Wednesday and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $315,145.
He plans to donate a portion of his winnings to Samaritan’s Purse in support of Hurricane Helene relief.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Thursday’s jackpot is $120,000.
