Licette Griffin of Greensboro fell to the floor in shock after she won a $1.16 million digital instant jackpot, her second lottery win of at least $1 million.
“I ran to the bedroom to tell my husband and he saw me buckling to the floor,” she recalled. “I literally went to the floor I was so weak at the knees.”
Griffin previously won $1 million on a $10 Jumbo Bucks scratch-off in April 2022. She had trouble processing the fact that she won $1 million again.
“My brain did not catch up with what was actually happening,” she said. “I was not expecting that.”
Griffin played a $2 ticket on July 18 and won the top level “Epic” jackpot in the Wheel of Bonuses game, a digital instant game featuring a progressive jackpot that can be won at any time. The odds of that win are 1 in 15.5 million.
Griffin said the timing of the big win made it even more special.
“I won the day after my husband’s birthday,” she said. “He wanted a pair of shoes for his birthday, so we went to Tanger and bought two pairs instead.”
She claimed her prize Thursday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $836,318.
Griffin plans to use her winnings to pay off her house and save for retirement.
In the Wheel of Bonuses digital instant game, a player can play from 50 cents to $30. After Griffin won the jackpot, it restarted at $50,000 and grew to over $140,000 as of Friday morning.
Digital instant games are played exclusively online on the lottery’s website or on the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Fifty different games are available to play online now.
