Clinton Graves of Raleigh tried his luck in a second-chance drawing and won the $1 million grand prize.
Graves won his prize on Aug. 6 in the second of four $8 Million Money Maker Second Chance drawings. There were 979,465 total entries in the drawing.
When Graves arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to claim his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000.
Graves chose the annuity of $50,000 so, for the next 19 years, he’ll get a check for $50,000 until the full $1 million prize is paid. He received the first of the 20 payments on Friday and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $35,878.
Players get a second chance with their $8 Million Money Maker scratch-offs by scanning them into their lottery accounts where they are automatically entered into the drawing. The drawing had one top prize of $1 million, three $100,000 prizes, 10 $25,000 winners and 50 winners of $500.
