Chad McLamb of Coats does not normally buy Powerball tickets, but he noticed the high jackpot so he tried his luck on Monday and won a $150,000 prize.
“I was shaking,” he recalled.
McLamb said it has been a long time since he bought Powerball tickets.
“I usually only buy them when the jackpot gets big,” he said. “I know it hasn’t been this big since last year.”
McLamb bought his lucky $3 Quick Pick ticket from Bass Country Store on N.C. 27 East in Coats. He matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000. Because he bought a Power Play ticket, his prize tripled to $150,000 when the 3X multiplier hit.
“This is perfect timing for us,” McLamb said. “It’ll make everything a lot more comfortable.”
He arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday to claim his winnings and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $107,626.
McLamb plans to use his winnings to do some home renovations and buy a car.
Saturday’s Powerball jackpot stands at a $1 billion annuity or $453.1 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
