Wake County man wins $100,000 Powerball prize

Richard Coats of Willow Spring tried his luck on a $3 Powerball ticket on Saturday and won a $100,000 prize.

Coats got his lucky ticket from Food Lion on North Raleigh Street in Angier. He matched the numbers on four white balls and the red Powerball to win $50,000. Because he bought a Power Play ticket, his prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier hit.

His winning ticket was one of three Powerball tickets in North Carolina that won $100,000 in Saturday’s drawing.

Coats arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to claim his winnings and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $71,746.

Monday’s Powerball jackpot stands at a $20 million annuity or $9.2 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

Powerball is one of six draw games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Michael B. Don't believe that. That money goes to NCEL. AND THEY KNOW IT.NC Lottery
Hi, John! When a player chooses annual payments of a prize, if they pass away, the remaining payments are still guaranteed - those payments would just go to the winner's estate if they've passed.

I just find it hard to believe that as mush as I spend and as many times I play i don't win anything how can I believe that people actually win.because as much as I play and paying don't win at all cant even remember the last time I even won $5 on powerball or mega millionsNC Lottery
Hi, Jamel! It definitely takes a lot of luck to be a big winner. We wish every ticket could win a prize, but prize money comes from non-winning tickets. Lottery games are games of chance, so it's important to play for fun, knowing it takes luck to beat the odds and win a prize.

Congrats Richard Coats and the others for a nice win! And whomever the lucky big winners were of the near $2B jackpot! Would be nice to see big jackpot winners like that in NC!

Question when a person wins the lottery and they don't take the lump sum and want the annuity, what happens if that person passes away bbefor the second annuityNC Lottery
Hi, Michael! If a winner chooses the annuity prize amount and passes away before receiving all of the annual payments, the remaining prize payments would be paid to the winner's estate.
