Durham man snags $345,269 Cash 5 jackpot

Danny Lloyd of Durham took a chance on a $1 Cash 5 ticket and won a $345,269 jackpot.

Lloyd bought his lucky ticket for the Dec. 18 drawing from the Family Fare on Roxboro Street in Durham. The odds of matching all five balls are 1 in 962,598.

He claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Lloyd took home $248,628.

Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Friday’s jackpot is $242,000.

Hi, Shirley! Every combination of numbers has the same odds of being drawn in each drawing, regardless of popularity. Every draw is an independent event, so past results have no bearing on future draws. A number could have been drawn yesterday, a month ago, or a year ago, and the odds of it being drawn in the next drawing would still be the same: 1 in 1,000 for Pick 3, or 1 in 10,000 for Pick 4.

You'll have a larger volume of both winning and non-winning tickets in proportion with the odds. That has no effect on the likelihood of a particular ticket winning or not winning a prize, whether it be in a big city or a small town. It has to be that way in order for the lottery to be fair to everyone!
