Wayne County man collects $1 million scratch-off win

Donald Godwin of Mount Olive took a chance on a $10 scratch-off and won a $1 million top prize.

Godwin bought his lucky Jumbo Bucks ticket from the Minuteman Food Mart on North Breazeale Avenue in Mount Olive.

When Godwin arrived Wednesday to claim his prize, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $432,063.

The Jumbo Bucks game debuted in August 2024 with eight $1 million top prizes. One $1 million prize remains to be claimed.

Wayne County has received state grants totaling over $28 million from monies raised by the lottery to help build a new elementary school. For details on other ways money raised by the lottery made a difference in Wayne County, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

I remember when the main prize was $750,000. Players would take home over $500,000 after taxes. The lottery once again took away from the players made it a million so the could give you the annuity or $432,000 now if you take it early. It’s a shame a real shame that the lottery board sits around and trys to figure out how to give the players less.
