Lottery players know the thrill of a big win, from matching lucky numbers to claiming a life-changing jackpot. Weldon City Schools recently celebrated their own winning feeling as they cut the ribbon on the brand-new Weldon Middle and High School.
A $50.5 million needs-based grant, funded by the North Carolina Education Lottery, helped to build the state-of-the-art $65 million campus. Community leaders say this sends a message of confidence to their students.
“It represents an investment in our children,” Halifax County Board of Commissioners Chairman Vernon Bryant said. “It says to our students, ‘You matter. Your education matters, and your future matters.’”
Weaving 65 Years of History into a Brand-New Era
While the campus features new technology and modern classrooms, the town's deeply-rooted history hasn’t been forgotten.
Architects preserved the original bricks from the former 65-year-old school building, laying them directly into the ground at the entrance of the new campus. Today, as students enter the building, they walk on the very bricks that paved the way for generations of Chargers before them. For local families, it’s a beautiful full-circle moment.
As proud parent and Board of Education Chair Tiffany Hale shared, “My mom went to this school, I went to school here, and now my son is going to go to school here.”
Beyond the Bricks: Lottery Dollars at Work
Every lottery ticket bought across North Carolina helps to build a brighter future, providing more than $1 billion a year for public education statewide. Halifax County alone has benefited from more than $151 million from the lottery since 2006.
In Weldon, this investment has come to life, backed by a community full of Charger pride. See what lottery dollars are making possible in your community through the interactive map on the lottery’s website.
