Reid Needham of Seagrove contemplated coming out of retirement and returning to work but now he won’t have to after winning a $167,777 Cash 5 jackpot on Thursday.
“The timing of this works out great,” he said. “I’m just thankful.”
Needham bought his lucky $1 Quick Pick ticket from the Quick’n Easy on N.C. 22 in High Falls. One other lucky ticket also matched the $335,554 Cash 5 jackpot so Needham received half of the prize. The odds of matching all five balls playing Cash 5 are 1 in 962,598.
“It was overwhelming,” Needham recalled. “I’m tickled to death.”
He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Needham took home $120,819.
In addition to using his winnings for his retirement, Needham plans to do some work on his home.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Tuesday’s jackpot is $142,000.
Randolph County received over $29 million from money raised by the lottery for construction on a new middle school. For details on other ways the lottery helps benefit education programs in Randolph County, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
