Friday’s Cash 5 drawing delivered a $301,922 jackpot to Bruce Russell of Holly Springs when he needed it most.
“This is perfect timing for us,” he said.
Russell, a great-grandfather of nine, said his wife recently underwent a medical procedure and winning the jackpot will help take care of the hospital bills.
“This really is a big relief,” Russell said. “It is a weight off our shoulders.”
He bought the lucky $1 Quick Pick ticket from the Stop N Go on North Main Street in Holly Springs. The odds of matching all five balls are 1 in 962,598.
“This is a biggie,” Russell said.
He claimed the prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Russell took home $217,414.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Monday’s jackpot is $120,000.
