Davie County man did a double take after winning $100,000

James Gilmore of Advance couldn’t believe his eyes after a $20 scratch-off won him a $100,000 prize.

“I had to take a second look at it to make sure,” he laughed.

Gilmore bought his lucky 100X The Cash ticket Monday night from the Speedway on U.S. 158 in Advance.

“I was shocked,” Gilmore said recalling the moment he realized he won.

He then wanted to share the news of his big win with his family.

“I went to my cousin’s house to show him,” Gilmore said. “He was very happy.”

Gilmore arrived at lottery headquarters Tuesday to claim his prize and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $72,016.

He plans to use his winnings to pay bills and pay off his truck.

DenverG I’m glad I wasn’t the only one wondering about the 7 winners on the Cash 5 Double Play. I hadn’t heard of the pair-mutual basis thing . Just thought that whoever did win the 50k would get that amount but apparently not. It’s not like the NCL doesn’t have the money to pay the full prize amount that’s advertised for the double play.

I have a question regarding the drawing for Cash 5 Double Play on Tuesday night February 3rd. Top prize is $50,000. I noticed that 7 winners for top prize was shown. Want to know why each winner was getting $35,700 instead of the full $50,000? It’s not a rolling jackpot so why do they not win the full $50k as advertised for a jackpot winner?NC Lottery
Hi there, Scott! The top prize in Cash 5 Double Play is paid on a pari-mutual basis if more than five Double Play tickets match all five numbers in a single drawing. This means that if there are more than 5 tickets matching the winning numbers, all winning tickets split a prize of $250,000. Hope this helps to clarify!

Congrats. Hey LZ, I saw this morning that 7 tickets had 5 of 5 on the C5 DP last night for $35,714 each. Still better then splitting the $50k. Not the first time I've seen multiple winners get all 5, even 2 or 3 players getting $50k each. What's the break point that determines if winners get less then $50.NC Lottery
