Brittany Brewer of Rockwell immediately thought of her son after a $5 scratch-off won her a $200,000 top prize.

“I’m going to invest this for my son’s future college fund,” she said.

Brewer said she had trouble believing that she won.

“I wanted to make sure the ticket was real,” she laughed.

Brewer’s disbelief at her big win quickly turned to elation.

“I was ecstatic,” she said.

Brewer bought her lucky $5 MONOPOLY® ticket from Little Buck Food Mart on North Cannon Boulevard in Kannapolis where she works.

She arrived Tuesday to claim her prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $144,021.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Brewer said.

In addition to her son’s college fund, Brewer plans to donate some of her winnings to her church.

The $5 MONOPOLY® game debuted in November with five $200,000 top prizes. Three $200,000 prizes remain to be claimed.

Anyone who works at a store that sells lottery tickets should not be allowed to purchase tickets from that same store. This is regardless of whether or not they are on the clock. It looks highly suspicious and undermines the so-called integrity that the NCEL is so proud of. As far as I'm concerned their integrity went out the window when they refused to give me my $500 I was cheated out of when a stupid Speedway cashier refused to sell me a pick 3 ticket and my numbers hit.NC Lottery
Hi, Charles! While there is no law in North Carolina barring retailers or their employees from playing the lottery, more than 80 percent of all lottery retailers in North Carolina report having a “No Play on Duty” policy for employees, including 99 percent of corporate retailers such as grocery and convenience store chains. Lottery prizes are only awarded when there is no evidence to suggest something is wrong.
