Christy and Jeffrey Pinckney of Winston-Salem plan to buy a new home for their family after a $10 scratch-off delivered the first $1 million top prize in a new lottery game.
“I about had a heart attack last night,” Christy laughed. “We’re both still in shock.”
They bought the lucky LOTERIA™ MULTIPLIER ticket Wednesday from the Snak's on Old Lexington Road in Winston-Salem.
They took the ticket home but waited to scratch it.
“I have to be in the right mood to scratch it,” Christy said. “And I only scratch with my lucky coin.”
When the couple arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday, they had a decision to make. They could choose to receive the prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. They chose to split the lump sum of $600,000. They each claimed $300,000 and, after required tax withholdings, each took home $216,031.
In addition to a new home, they plan to buy a car for their daughter.
The LOTERIA™ MULTIPLIER game debuted this month with four top prizes of $1 million. Three $1 million prizes remain to be claimed.
