Michelle Morganti of Durham received an early birthday surprise when she found out she won $100,000 in a $8 Million Money Maker Second Chance drawing. There were more than 1.5 million total entries in the drawing.
Morganti said this is not the first time she has gotten lucky with the lottery.
More than a decade before her big win, a lottery-funded scholarship helped Morganti earn her nursing degree from Durham Technical Community College.
“The lottery helped pay for my education,” she shared. “It paid for part of my books and classes for nursing school.”
A passion for education runs in Morganti’s family. Her mother and both of her two sons pursued careers as educators in the classroom.
So far, the fun of playing the lottery has raised more than $800 million to make dreams of college become a reality for 1.3 million students like Michelle.
Last year alone, $46 million from the lottery helped to fund more than 136,000 Next NC scholarships for students attending a public university or community college.
The road to higher education looks different for everyone. Whether it be a first-generation college student or a working mom going back to school, everyone has a story worth celebrating. Our Moving NC Students Forward program does just that.
Recipients of lottery-funded scholarships are eligible for the chance to win $2000 by sharing how their scholarship impacted their path to higher education. Hear their stories and enter your own at MovingNCStudentsForward.com.
