Beverly Johnson of Charlotte sat at home playing digital instant games on her phone when out of the blue she landed on a $167,336 jackpot.
“It was dreamlike,” she recalled. “It felt unreal for sure. But it was real.”
Johnson played for $5 on May 8 and won the top level ‘Gold Jackpot’ in the Multiplier Mania game. The game features a progressive jackpot that can be won at any time. The odds of that win are 1 in 8 million.
“I ran downstairs to tell my husband,” Johnson said. “He was shocked. I had to show him my phone to prove it to him.”
She claimed her prize Friday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $120,500.
“It was just a wing and a prayer,” Johnson said.
She plans to use her winnings to invest and buy a generator.
In the Multiplier Mania digital instant game, a player can play from 50 cents to $30. After Johnson won the jackpot, it restarted at $80,000 and grew to over $84,000 as of Friday afternoon.
Digital instant games are played exclusively online on the lottery’s website or on the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Seventy-four different games are available to play online now.
