Jerome McMillion of Fayetteville always told people he would win big playing the lottery and on Saturday his prediction came true when a $5 scratch-off delivered him a $200,000 top prize.
“The day before I won I was talking to my coworker about the lottery and I told him, ‘You’ve got to be in it to win it,’” McMillion recalled. “I’ve always said, ‘I’m going to Raleigh one day.’”
McMillion bought his lucky High Voltage Cash ticket from the Lucky Stop on Legion Road in Hope Mills.
“I’ve been in a daze for the entire weekend,” McMillion laughed. “I almost fell and bumped my head.”
He arrived in Raleigh at lottery headquarters Tuesday to claim his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $144,021.
“This is life-changing money to me,” he said. “You don’t even know how happy I am.”
McMillion plans to use the money to invest.
The High Voltage Cash game debuted in October with four $200,000 top prizes. One $200,000 prize remains to be claimed.
