Edward Young of Greensboro only plays the lottery once in a while and that’s all it took for him to win a $735,645 Cash 5 jackpot.
“I play maybe five times all year but I saw the high jackpot so I decided to try it,” he said. “It was just in my spirit.”
Young bought his lucky $1 Quick Pick ticket for the June 2 drawing using Online Play. The odds of matching all five balls playing Cash 5 are 1 in 962,598.
“I was hyperventilating,” Young laughed recalling his winning moment.
The timing of the win works out great for Young and his family.
“I will be 76 on Thursday and our 40th wedding anniversary is coming up too,” Young said. “This is a blessing for us.”
He claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Young took home $529,738.
Young plans to use his winnings to help his family.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Wednesday’s jackpot is $130,000.
