Gary Vaughan Jr. of Newport already has big plans for his winnings after a $20 scratch-off turned into a $100,000 prize.
“I’m going to buy a piece of property and a truck,” he said.
Vaughan bought his lucky 100X The Cash ticket from Save U Time on Chatham Street in Newport. When he scanned his ticket, he initially thought he won a much smaller prize.
“At first I was hoping it might be $5,000,” Vaughan recalled.
When Vaughan saw how much he won, he showed it to the store clerk who sold him the ticket. He said she was almost as excited as him.
“She danced a jig,” Vaughan laughed. “She didn’t even know what to say.”
Vaughan arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday to claim his prize and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $72,016.
The 100X The Cash game debuted in January 2025 with four $2 million top prizes and six $100,000 prizes. One $2 million prize remains to be claimed.
Carteret County received $14.2 million in grants, using money raised by the lottery, to help with school construction. For details on other ways Carteret County education programs benefit from lottery funds, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
