Tennessee man celebrates $823,409 Cash 5 jackpot win

Terry Haywood Sr. of Ooltewah, Tenn., took a chance on a $1 Cash 5 ticket on Tuesday and won an $823,409 jackpot.

Haywood bought his lucky ticket from Hot Spot on U.S. 64 West in Murphy. The odds of matching all five balls playing Cash 5 are 1 in 962,598.

He claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Haywood took home $592,938.

Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Friday’s jackpot is $120,000.

I thought the Carolina CASH5 game was ONLY for NC residents. So, anyone from anywhere can buy a CASH5 ticket and win, as long as they buy it within NC's borders? Can non-residents also purchase the CASH5 via online play?NC Lottery

Congrats! @NCEL I have a Digital Instant question...The games that you have to choose the bonus does it really matter, because the prize is already determined when you click play...same with the Coin on the 250 America game... do you get the Coin and really don't WIN because that was a loser from the start? Hi Angela! When you play Digital Instants, your ticket is played against a "full deck" of all the possible outcomes. The outcome of a play is determined once you click the Play button and the system randomly selects a ticket, so the items you click during the bonus rounds will not change the outcome of the ongoing play.

Hi Shirley! In every Cash POP drawing, each number has the same odds of being randomly drawn: 1 in 15. With only 15 numbers to choose from, it's not surprising we'll see numbers pop up repeatedly over time, but the odds of any number being drawn in each drawing are always the same.

The amount of money that the lottery generates, you would think that the app would work right. I was checking my Cash 5 ticket, I knew it was a winner. I scanned my ticket 2 times, the screen showed not a winner. On the 3rd scan, it showed the dollar amount. If I hadn't known it was a winner beforehand, the ticket would have been thrown away. Your I.T. team or whoever created the app need to get the bugs out of the app. Wonder how much money is thrown away because the app may show the wrong message?NC Lottery
