Austin Lakey of Mocksville had to convince his wife he really won the lottery after his $30 scratch-off delivered a $100,000 top prize.
“When she got home I told her, ‘We won a hundred grand,’” Lakey said. “She didn’t believe me.”
He bought his lucky $100,000 Cash Payday scratch-off from Hill’s Minnow Farm on Bringle Ferry Road in Salisbury.
“I scratched it and there it was,” Lakey recalled. “You’ve just got to be in the right place at the right time I guess.”
He arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday to claim his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $72,018.
“I’m beyond grateful for this,” Lakey said. “This is perfect timing for us.”
He plans to use his winnings to help his family and buy a new phone.
The $100,000 Cash Payday game debuted in March with 80 $100,000 top prizes. Sixty-one $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
