Donald Harper of New Bern couldn’t believe his eyes on Friday when a $30 scratch-off delivered him a $100,000 top prize.
“I was totally shocked seeing all those zeroes,” he recalled. “I was just like, ‘Wow!’”
Harper bought his lucky $100,000 Cash Payday scratch-off from the Zip Thru on U.S. 70 West in Havelock.
“I never expected to win but you just never know,” Harper said.
He arrived at lottery headquarters Monday to claim his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $72,018.
“I can’t ask for much more than that,” Harper said.
He plans to use his winnings to pay bills.
The $100,000 Cash Payday game debuted in March with 80 $100,000 top prizes. Fifty-nine $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
