Pasquotank County woman wins $1 million playing Powerball

August 14, 2026 Posted by NC Lottery at 3:18 PM

Janet Cornelius of Elizabeth City took a chance on a $2 Powerball ticket and won a $1 million prize.

Cornelius matched numbers on all five white balls in Wednesday’s drawing. The odds of that happening are 1 in 11.6 million.

She bought her lucky Powerball ticket from the Hop-In Citgo on North Road Street in Elizabeth City.

Cornelius arrived at lottery headquarters Thursday to claim the prize. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $720,100.

Powerball is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

Shirley B...it's no coincidence trips haven't fallen in a while.notice that the number you need for a trip or a quad comes in the fireball # that means way less pay outs.just stating the obvious.
