Shyheem McNeil of Willow Spring had just left work Saturday when he decided to try his luck with a $5 20X The Cash scratch-off and won a $250,000 prize.
“Something told me to play,” said McNeil.
McNeil let his hand hover over the tickets, and wherever his lucky pinky ring landed would be the card he would buy.
He purchased his 20X The Cash ticket from the Sheetz on North Main Street in Fuquay-Varina.
“It was absolute excitement,” McNeil recalled. McNeil arrived at lottery headquarters on Monday to claim his prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $180,026.
He plans to use his winnings to buy a Honda.
The 20X The Cash game debuted in January with 15 top prizes of $250,000. Twelve remain to be claimed. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1.4 million.
Education programs in Johnston County received $14.6 million in support from lottery funds last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
