George Boston of Warrenton returned from a trip to New York and learned that he won a $1 million Powerball prize.
“When I came back, I heard that there was a winner in Warrenton,” he said. “I looked at my ticket on the table and went, ‘Oh wow, I got a match.’”
Boston bought his lucky $2 ticket from Tobacco Plus on East Macon Street in Warrenton. The ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls to win $1 million. The odds of matching numbers on all five white balls are 1 in 11.6 million.
He tried to call his wife and kids to share the news, but no one answered. When his daughter called back, he greeted her by saying, “I’m a winner! I’m a winner!”
Boston arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to claim his winnings and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $720,101.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot stands at a $48 million annuity or $20.8 million in cash. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
Powerball is one of six draw games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.
