Durham woman bags first $200,000 top prize in new game

September 2, 2026 Posted by NC Lottery at 2:27 PM

Isa Mitchell of Durham took a chance on the CASH scratch-off game and won the first $200,000 top prize.

Mitchell bought her lucky $5 ticket Tuesday from Circle K on West N.C. 54 in Durham.

She came to the lottery headquarters on Tuesday to claim her prize. After state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $144,021.

CASH debuted in August with three $200,000 top prizes, two of which remain. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,596,860.

Durham County received $13.6 million last year for educational programs. For details on other ways money from the lottery made a difference for education programs in Durham County, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.

Congrats to the, but money does stay close to Raleigh. Now here in Charlotte,I go to a store with #13 seller status, 3 machines, and counter loaded with $20 and above tickets. Yet never sold a top seller or 2nd prize either.NC Lottery
Hi Phyllis! The lottery doesn't know where the winning tickets are distributed. A majority of winners do not live in any one area. Prize money is won more or less in proportion with how many people are playing for a chance to win. It's not easier or harder to win the lottery depending on where you live, the odds are the same.

Congrats Mitchell! You don't see that kind of low-risk ROI except in these cases. A simple $5 turns into a minimum $144K and change after initial taxes. Just think, upfront that's around $12K every month for the year, cash in-hand!
