Players across the state claimed 21 prizes of $100,000 or more in April, including one $10 million prize and three $1 million prizes.
Every winner has a special story that they’ll never forget. We love hearing each one. Here’s a quick recap of some of our favorites:
- #3 $250,000 lottery prize means a dream trip to Italy for Charlotte cancer patient: Richard Beare became the second top prize winner for the new Carolina Black scratch-off game. “I recently got diagnosed with stage four liver cancer,” Richard said. “I want to travel while I can still enjoy myself. My wife has always wanted to go to Italy, since that’s where her descendants are from. Now I can take her.”
- #2 Granville County grandfather to buy dream home with $10 million lottery prize: Theodore Duncan of Oxford won the second $10 million top prize from the Colossal Cash scratch-off game. “I always told people that one day I’d hit the lottery,” he said when he got the check. “Today’s that day. It feels so good.” Theodore said he plans to retire and then buy his dream house. On his list of ‘must-haves’ for the home is a pool!
- #1 Grandfather gives granddaughter a prize that will last a lifetime: Kelly Thomas of Clemmons received the gift of a lifetime – $25,000 a year for life, for the rest of her life – when her grandfather gave her a winning Lucky for Life ticket as a gift. “To be able to focus on something I’m passionate about, thanks to my grandpa, is an amazing gift,” she said. Kelly said she plans to use the money to pay her tuition at UNC-Wilmington as she studies to become a teacher.
Congratulations to all of our April big winners! We’re looking forward to meeting even more of you in May.
