Our players started the year off with a bang! Folks across the state claimed 18 prizes of $100,000 or more in January, including one Lucky for Life $1,000 A Day For Life prize and four $1 million prizes.
Every winner has a special story that they’ll never forget. We love hearing each one. Here’s a quick recap of some of our favorites:
James Paschal of Broadway became the first North Carolina player to win $1 million in the new decade. His good fortune happened when he stopped at the Fastee Mart on Lee Avenue in Sanford and bought a Big Money scratch-off ticket. “I was shell-shocked,” he said. “I thought I was reading it wrong. When I told my wife, she started screaming. We jumped up and down and hugged each other.”
On his way to play golf, Skip Brinson of Richlands stopped at the Handy Mart on Richlands Highway in Jacksonville and bought two $250,000 WIN IT ALL scratch-offs. His first ticket won him $10. He sunk a $250,000 prize on the second. “It’s just one of those things,” he said as he collected his prize. “I wasn’t expecting to do anything, and there it was.”
Jacqueline Carpenter of Dallas started 2020 off with a big win after her son bought her a BIG SPIN scratch-off ticket and she won $100,000. Her son, Adrian, came with her when she claimed her prize. “It’s a heck of a way to start 2020,” Adrian said. “She was ecstatic. She was literally floating. It gave me pure joy to see her so happy.”
Damian Zepponi of Winston-Salem won the prize of a lifetime – $1,000 a day for life, for the rest of her life – when she matched all six numbers on her Lucky For Life ticket. “I couldn’t do anything,” she said, “but sit and cry and be amazed.”
Congratulations to all of January’s big winners! We’re looking forward to making 2020 the winningest year yet.
