Some Mega Millions players with multidraw tickets get refunds

Due to changes to the national Mega Millions game, we are providing refunds for Mega Millions multidraw ticket holders who purchased their multidraw tickets on or before April 3.

The changes, announced on Friday, April 3, are that the national Mega Millions game will set the jackpot and the amount the jackpot increases drawing-by-drawing based on ticket sales and interest rates.

Why the refund?
We are offering the refund because the changes, allowed under the game rules, went into effect immediately. Some who were buying those multidraw tickets may not have had information about the changes before their purchase. We believe it’s the right thing to do for our players.

What does that mean for you?
Any player who purchased a multidraw Mega Millions ticket or on before April 3, 2020, will receive a refund for the price of all remaining drawings after April 3, 2020 through the expiration of that ticket.

How do I get my refund?
If you made one of those Mega Millions multidraw purchases, please call our Customer Service helpline at 877-962-4530. You can also download the Mega Millions Multidraw Refund Claim Form for additional information about how to claim the refund at https://nclottery.com/ClaimPrizes.

Are my purchased tickets still valid?
Absolutely. In addition to the refund, those Mega Millions players will keep their ticket as a free ticket. Those tickets remain valid and are still eligible to win one of the nine prizes offered in the Mega Millions game, including the jackpot, in any of the upcoming drawings in which plays were purchased. Any prizes won in those drawings, however, will be awarded under the new prize structure announced on Friday, April 3.

When will refunds be made?
As soon as possible after we receive your request. Because of our state’s Stay At Home order, expect our processing of mail to take longer. You have until Dec. 31, 2020 to request a refund.

is it possible that the retailers aren't cashing out the tickets that have winnings because they're not sure when the lottery will be able to reimburse them ? Some retailers ( grocery stores especially) are booming in business right now and having the cash should not be a problem at this time.NC Lottery
Hi Tony, While our claim centers are closed, our finance department is still processing payments and keeping everything going as it relates to our retailers. Some retail locations are experiencing higher than usual demand right now due to the coronavirus, like grocery stores. This might mean that the places that you normally claim your prizes under $600 might not be able to process lottery payouts at this time.

As a online player of the Mega Millions game. How do I get a refund to my multidraw ticket. Seeing that I never got a paper ticket I can make a copy of to send in. NC Lottery

Seems like making a refund of a couple of dollars is made a little drawn out to avoid paying it out. Most are produced by retailers and should be done the same way. Multi draws that win can be cashed out and the machine produces another one for the remaining draws. Can be done for this.

In regards to cashing in winning tickets, someone needs to contact the retailers. If they can not pay out a ticket under $600 then they should not sell them. I travel the state and it's the same response just about at every retailer. "We don't have it". I go back hours later, same response. I'm aware I can mail them in but that shouldn't have to happen. A memo or something maybe. This is beginning to be a problem. NC Lottery
Hello Robert. Sorry for the inconvenience you've been experiencing. Some retailers don't keep enough cash on hand to cash out lottery prizes. However they should offer players the option of getting other forms of payment such as a business check or money order. Thank you for letting us know what happened.

Hello, Wanted to let you know that the number above ending in *7525 is incorrect. It's to a survey offering $50 in retailer gift cards for $1.95 "please have your credit card ready." LOL . Not the end of the world, as no one is perfect. Just wanted to let you know. I did find the correct # ending in *7529. Agent at NCEL said "I dont know why its telling ppl to call." She said it has to be done by online claim form. To make a copy of multidraw ticket and mail the copy of ticket in w/ claim form. I'm not able to print any form off, as libraries are not open. I will figure it out. Thank YouNC Lottery
Thank you for catching that, Felicia. We've updated the number in the post above. A form must be completed in order to receive the refund, but our Customer Services team is here to help walk you through it if needed.
