Charlotte woman wins first $100,000 prize in new Cash 5 promotion

Georgia Richardson of Charlotte became the first winner of the $100,000 top prize in the new Cash 5 Bonus Cash promotion.

Her good luck occurred Monday in the first drawing for the promotion. Each drawing offers one prize of $100,000 and 40 prizes of $500.

Richardson’s entry won the $100,000 prize. She arrived at lottery headquarters Friday to collect her prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $71,250.

The Cash 5 Bonus Cash Drawing promotion runs through Jan. 29. Three more drawings are scheduled.

Players who spend $5 or more on a single Carolina Cash 5 ticket in a retail location receive an entry into the drawing. Richardson purchased her Cash 5 ticket from the Harris Teeter on Providence Road in Charlotte.

The entry deadline for the second drawing will be this Sunday. The drawing is scheduled for Monday.

Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets through a retail location or Online Play, either through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Cash 5 tickets are $1 and drawings are held every night.

The odds of winning a Cash 5 jackpot are 1 in 962,598. Saturday’s jackpot is $476,000.

Hi there, Christopher! Each Bonus Cash entry ticket had the same odds of being randomly selected as the lucky winner - we used a securely audited RNG to determine the winners for this drawing. The winning numbers happened to be from a player in Charlotte, but the location the ticket was printed has no influence on odds of being a winner - it just takes a whole lot of luck!

Congratulations to all the winners! Please don't make the same mistake as I did. I went to purchase 5 tickets but never got an entry ticket. I kept explaining to the clerk there should be another ticket for the promotion & she couldn't explain why I did not get one. I felt something was wrong so I decided to go to another store & buy another 5 tickets & luckily this time I got my entry to ticket! After looking at the ticket I noticed all 5 picks were on 1 single ticket but at the other store the picks were on 5 separate tickets. The clerk clearly made a mistake bc I never asked for separate tickets, only 5 qp cash 5..the same way I asked at the 2nd store. Very disappointed to say the least...not to mention my boyfriend also purchased 5 tickets after me at the first store smh

I am surprised that some people post about winners located in Charlotte. This promotion just draws the numbers from all the entries printed in a week. It really doesn't matter where you live. And they have no way of even knowing where you are located.

Congratulations to you, madam! I have two entries into it for Monday, the 16th. Hope either one of them will be the winner for me. 100,000 will be ok with me, even after the taxes are taken out. Hi Bobby, every lottery ticket has an equal chance at winning, regardless of where it was purchased. If you were to move to Charlotte, you'd have more neighbors; if you moved to a tiny town, you'd have less. But what everyone would have in common in all those places is that each individual would have the exact same chance of winning a lottery prize!

Hi Shirley, the chance of trips being drawn are same as they have been, exactly 1 in 1,000. Those odds never change, no matter how recently or long ago a triple came out. We love it when popular numbers come up at random, because that means our players win a bunch of prizes! But for draw games to be fair, every number has to have the same chance of being drawn.
