North Carolinians can play this week for jackpots in the Powerball and Mega Millions games that both offer prizes worth over $300 million.

Tonight’s Powerball jackpot stands at a $352 million annuity that is worth $163.3 million in cash. Tuesday’s Mega Millions jackpot stands at a $335 million annuity that is worth $153.1 million in cash.

“We always get excited when both Mega Millions and Powerball go on big runs at the same time,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “We have seen some big wins recently in both games and hopefully we will be celebrating a big jackpot win in North Carolina this week.”

As players continue to try for the jackpots, North Carolinians keep winning other big prizes in both games. One lucky player from Lillington in Harnett County won $1 million in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing. The ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls to win the prize. The odds of matching numbers on all five white balls are 1 in 11.6 million.

Wednesday’s win marked the third $1 million Powerball or Mega Millions win in North Carolina in less than a week.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million. The odds of winning a Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302 million.

Players can buy Powerball or Mega Millions tickets at any lottery retail location or through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com.

Play Smart, Gift Smart raises awareness that lottery tickets are not appropriate gifts for kids as part of a national gift responsibly campaign. Research shows that the earlier someone participates in or is exposed to gambling, the more likely they are to develop a gambling problem later in life. Do y'all think the starting amount will go back to the 40 million again?NC Lottery
Hi, Roger! This decision would lie with the Multi-State Lottery Association, who oversee the Powerball and Mega Millions games. At this time, we haven't heard of any plans to change the starting jackpot again, but it isn't outside of the realm of possibilities!

Why are the odds higher on MEGA MILLIONS, than POWERBALL? Just curious.NC Lottery
Hey there, Roger! While the odds are similar, the number of possible combinations is slightly different between Powerball and Mega Millions. Powerball players choose numbers 1-69 for the white ball numbers, and a Powerball number between 1-26. Whereas Mega Millions players choose numbers between 1-70, and Mega Ball numbers between 1-25. These slight differences lead to a different number of total possible combinations, which affects the overall odds of being a winner.

How much is that after taxes in NC if you take the lump sum?! Hopefully, someone in NC can win a big jackpot soon :)NC Lottery
Hey there, Ebony! We withhold the minimum required taxes (4.75% for NC tax, and 24% federal), though an individual's tax obligation may be more. If a winner chose the Mega Millions lump sum of 153.1 million, they would receive around $110.8 million after minimum taxes are withheld. If a winner chose the Powerball lump sum of 163.3 million, they would receive around $118.2 million after tax withholding.

Hi, Will ticket entrees ever increase to 100? Thank you.NC Lottery
Hi, Jacqueline! We've had some players say that the daily limit of 75 is too little, and others think it's too high. At this time, we don't have any plans to change the ticket limit, but we'll share with our players if that ever changes!
