Jeffrey Huppe of Charlotte checked his Cash 5 numbers early Monday morning and discovered he won a $144,419 jackpot.
“I turned the lights on in the bedroom at like 4:30 to wake up my wife to tell her,” he laughed.
Huppe bought his lucky $1 ticket using Online Play. The odds of matching all five balls playing Cash 5 are 1 in 962,598.
“I had to look at it like three times to make sure,” Huppe recalled.
He claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, Huppe took home $103,996.
“That’s awesome,” Huppe said when he received his big check.
He plans to use his winnings to donate to local charities.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Friday’s jackpot is $130,000.
